What is Hernia?

Hernia is an abnormal bulge in the groin, umbilicus or scar site. In laparoscopic hernia repair three small openings are made in the abdomen. Telescope like instrument is used to view the inside of the abdomen. A synthetic mesh is used to provide strength to the hernia site and to prevent recurrence.

  • Swelling or bulge in the groin or scrotum (the pouch that contains the testicles).
  • Increased pain at the site of the bulge.
  • Pain while lifting.
  • Increase in the bulge size over time.
  • A dull aching sensation.
  • A sense of feeling full or signs of bowel obstruction.
  • Types:

Inguinal hernia: swelling in the groin region.
Umbilical hernia: swelling in the umbilical region.
Incisional hernia: swelling/hernia in the previously operated scar site

Hernia is usually diagnosed by clinical examination

Usg: ultrasound to detect smaller hernias
CT: in case of complex hernias requiring abdominal wall reconstruction.

Obstruction: If a part of intestine gets into hernia sac, it can get obstructed. It’s a surgical emergency requiring immediate surgery.
Strangulation: If not operated at obstructed stage it can lead to necrosis of the bowel wall.

Open: Traditionally hernia is treated by open surgery and by placing the mesh.
Laparoscopic hernia repair: In this surgery only keyhole incisions are made and hernia surgery is done. Mesh is placed to prevent recurrence of hernia.
